Income tax in Colombia

Filing season is a yearly source of quiet dread: am I required to file, when exactly is my deadline, and who do I ask.

The tax module answers those three questions in order. It is currently Colombia only, and it appears for people whose country is Colombia, whose main currency is Colombian pesos, or who hold an account in pesos, so someone who signed up with the wrong country still finds it.

Step one: do you have to file?​

The first screen walks the filing requirements and asks you the questions that decide it, in plain language rather than statute wording.

Your answer is saved on your device, for that season, so you are not asked again every time you open the app. It carries across the two places where the question appears, and it lasts until the next season.

If the answer is no, you get a screen that says exactly that and stops bothering you. Nothing else needs to happen.

Step two: your deadline​

Colombian deadlines are staggered by the last digits of your NIT, which is why "the deadline" is a different day for you and your neighbour.

Enter yours and the app shows your date, together with a timeline of the season so you can see where today falls between the opening and your deadline. Those dates come from the published calendar, not from an estimate.

Then set reminders, so the date arrives with warning rather than as a surprise.

Step three: help, if you want it​

The third step offers to put you in touch with the accounting team.

This is the only part of the module where anything leaves your phone, and it happens only if you explicitly accept being contacted. Then your name, your email, your phone if you linked WhatsApp, and your country are sent so someone can reach out.

If you do not accept, your answers never leave the device. Answering "yes, I have to file" by itself sends nothing.

What this module is not​

It does not file for you, it does not connect to the tax authority, and it is not tax advice. It tells you whether the requirements apply to you, when your date is, and offers a human who does this for a living.
